George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest

  • This nationwide contest is designed to give high school students (sophomores, juniors, and seniors) an opportunity to explore events that shaped American History. The contest was named for the George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest in honor of their generous gift to the SAR to support it.
  • The contest flyer provides an overview of the contest as well as the cash awards.
  • If you are interested in this contest, please be sure to abide by the contest rules.
  • Deadline for sophmores, juniors, and seniors in San Diego County schools is December 31, 2007 (postmark date). Electronic submission will be accepted in Adobe PDF format only! Note that this is earlier than the advertised State and National deadlines in order to allow us time to select a winner and forward the winner's essay to the State contest in time for their deadline.
  • If you live in San Diego and have questions on this contest, please contact the San Diego SAR Knight Essay Contest Chairman, Joe DeStefano at KnightEssay@sbcglobal.net.

*The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has enhanced its online index to the Genealogical Records Committee Reports-the name for its collection of genealogical information from family Bibles, tombstones, church records and the like. DAR, a lineage society for women with Colonial ancestors, has a research library in Washington, DC.

Search the 18 million-name (and still growing) index at http://grc.dar.org/dar/darnet/grc/grc.cfm?Action=New_Search for your ancestor and results now show you the book title and a link to its catalog record with the volume number and location in DAR's library. You'll also see the contents of the subject and notes fields, which can help you determine if the book is relevant to your research. Click Ordering Page Copies for details on requesting photocopies of the pages with your ancestor's name.
